Weblogic Managed Server multicast packets issue: Critical Subsystem Cluster has failed.

If you see below error on starting a managed server:

<Error> <Cluster> <BEA-000170> <Server managedServer1 did not receive the multicast packets that were sent by itself>
<Critical> <Health> <BEA-310006> <Critical Subsystem Cluster has failed. Setting server state to FAILED.

Its most likely an issue of IP of servers. I don't know if there would be other causes to it but this is what happened in my case:

I had configured a domain for a specific IP originally, however when I changed the IP the above error logged on console.

Solution: Connected laptop to a network and provided a static IP(which was originally assigned) to it.

(Note : I tried to update the IP of servers to a new IP of assigned by new network however it didn't work.)

Starting WebLogic Servers without providing Username and Password manually

During development, if one has to stop and start the servers 'n' number of times a day, to provide a username and password on every startup becomes annoying?

I was tired of doing it, found out very simple solution to it:

Create a boot.properties file under a domain directory: (D:\bea\user_projects\domains\{$Domain_Name}\) with below properties in it.

username=sachin
password=more

After you create above and start the server, it will encrypt both the values automatically.

Note -
1. Both Admin and Managed servers will read the login properties from boot.properties file.
2. No need of any explicit setting to point to boot.properties in environment.

Weblogic hangs after IIOP configuration

Weblogic server hangs after IIOP configuration completed (last line in the log file: " ".)

Below are last few lines of stack trace:

There was NO activity after the last statement.

Solution:

Weblogic does a "security" initialization after IIOP configuration.

While doing security initialization, weblogic initialize the LDAP, that's where the problem seemed to be. LDAP files("\server\\data\ldap" folder) might have been corrupted.

So deleted (actually just renamed it to .bak) the server folder under "\server\ folder (made it to folder).

On restart of weblogic this folder will get recreated from scratch and the problem was resolved!!!

Download multiple files from FTP

To download multiple files from FTP server with some pattern use "mget" command.

(e.g. To get all zip files from ftp server, user following command)

ftp> mget *.zip

The server will keep asking for confirmation before starting the download for each file. If you want to disable the confirmation prompt, use "prompt" command.

Weblogic Cannot open paging store

I was surprised NOT to see any search results on this issue!

Error Message:

#### <[ACTIVE] ExecuteThread: '0' for queue: 'weblogic.kernel.Default (self-tuning)'> <> <> <> Cannot open paging store

What is JMS Paging Store :
Each JMS server implicitly creates a file based paging store. When the WebLogic Server JVM runs low on memory, this store is used to page non-persistent messages as well as JDBC store persistent messages.

The paged out message bodies are written by default under:
C:\bea921\user_projects\domains\$DomainName\servers\$ServerName\tmp

By looking at the error message WL seem to have encountered an error while opening the paging store(assuming some file under tmp folder).

Action Step:
1. Shut down the servers.
2. Take a backup of "tmp" directory.
C:\bea921\user_projects\domains\$DomainName\servers\$ServerName\tmp
3. Delete the tmp directory under
C:\bea921\user_projects\domains\$DomainName\servers\$ServerName\
4. Restart the servers. (Server start will create the tmp directory on startup).

Oracle XE could not start in Ubuntu

I could not start Oracle XE in ubuntu by using /etc/init.d oracle-xe start. It did not throw any error but did not start too.

Solution: Try /etc/init.d oracle-xe force-reload

This command will shut down the server and start it all over again.

Weblogic- BEA-001129, Received exception while creating connection for pool

Reason: One of reason would be your database connection itself is down.

Solution: Get the database up and running and restart the server.

Adobe Flash not working with Firefox-3.5 in Ubunutu 9.04

I was trying to use Balsamiq through latest Firefox installed in Ubuntu 9.04, but it didn't work. I was getting the following blank page:

While searching for solution, I found the following commands here, which fixed the problem with flash player and Balsamiq worked successfully then.
From terminal, execute the following commands:
wget http://queleimporta.com/downloads/flash10_en.sh
sudo sh ./flash10_en.sh

After running the above commands successfully, I can see Balsamiq mockup pop-up window...

BlogCamp2 Pune

When I reached BlogCamp @ 09:45 AM, I was expecting lots of geeks to be present there. But to my disappointment, there were not many present :-( . Other disappointment was, no T-shirts offered at registration counter :-( . One new thing(at least for me) at the counter was, instead of the email id, they asked for my Twitter id - @moresach (I had one, but never used!).

Tarun, one of the organizers of Blogcamp2, started with an introduction to BlogCamp @ 10:10 AM, with a nice PPT having picture on almost every slide (I think, A picture speaks a thousand words). As it was an unconferencing conference he asked us to introduce ourselves. Luckily, I was introducing myself, someone clicked my picture and to my surprise, the same picture was published in next day's TimesOfIndia. After quite a bit of effort, today I could finally find the photographer and got this picture!

I really liked the enthusiasm of the attendees, especially the Mumbai bloggers were really energetic.

Sessions at Blogcamp:

@MeetuKabra

The first session at BlogCamp was really interactive. Meetu blogs on movie reviews & her topic was “Marketing your Blog”. She wasn’t new to blogging, but certainly did n0t have much expertise in marketing her blog that effectively. Other bloggers from the audience gave many useful inputs. Meetu appreciated all of those inputs & accepted quite a few of them. I really liked this session, as it was more of discussion than typical presentation.

He was the youngest blogger of the blogcamp, he is just 15. And most of us were surprised that his blog gets around 38,000 hits a month!

@Scientist

This was one of the most knowledge rich, however monotonous session. No one asked a single question during or after the session. Maybe everyone was feeling sleepy with there stomach full.

@Abhishek Thakkar,

He became the center of attraction at the end of BlogCamp! Whoever was sleeping in earlier session(at least I was) was shaken & woke up with Abhiskek’s standup act in lobby.

Have you read "Five Point Someone" by Chetan Bhagat? I was feeling like Chetan is standing in front of me & narrating his story. Yes, Abhishek is also an ex IITan. In the lobby, when he was sharing his experiences on various kinds of blogging, no one wanted to step away. He reiterated, "All of my blogs are in Cryo state now. And there is no point in visiting them at this moment. But they can revive anytime." I couldn't stop myself from checking out his extraordinary blogs & I could find them immediately through my iPhone. After some time, all of us moved to the conference room and enjoyed Abhishek's stories for almost an hour (I can't recollect from where I grabbed these pictures now)

Others:
Besides the above sessions, there were few more good sessions as well. Ankesh talked about "How to make money from blogging". Navin gave us many useful tips on blogging and also explained how bloggers can learn from the Newspapers.

Annkur had a lot of debate in his session on beginners mistakes. He also discussed, How he is moving from quantity to quality of blog.

I missed one parallel session which was going on at the time of Annkur's session: "How to migrate to WordPress", so you can see, I am still on Blogger!

It wasn't a great finish, I left the place as soon as Thakkar finished his entertainment! However it was worth visiting the camp. I am following most of them on twitter now along with few more ppl I found I would love to follow. That's one of the important take away for me from this Camp.

Looking forward to attend the upcoming BarCamp(waiting for the date to be announced)!!!

First generation iPhone jailbreak for 2.1 software update

These are instructions on how to unlock/jailbreak your 2G iPhone to the 2.1 iPhone firmware using QuickPwn for Windows. Before beginning make sure you have updated to iTunes 8.

Step One
Create a folder called Pwnage on your desktop.

Download the following files and place them in the Pwnage folder you just created:
- QuickPwn 2.1
- BL 3.9
- BL 4.6
- 2.1.0 (2G): iPhone1,1_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw

Extract the QuickPwn21-1.zip file to the Pwnage folder.

Step Two
Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes.

Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down shift and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won't create any wasted space on your iPhone.

Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the 2.1 firmware ipsw. Click the Open button to continue.

Step Three
Once iTunes has finished updating your iPhone to the 2.1 firmware you may launch QuickPwn.exe from the Pwnage folder on your desktop.

Step Four
Make sure you iPhone is connected to the computer and click the blue arrow to continue.

Step Five
Click the Browse button to locate your iPhone firmware.

Step Six
Select the 2.1 firmware ipsw from the Pwnage folder on your desktop then click the Open button.

Step Seven
QuickPwn will check to make sure the ipsw is valid. Click the blue arrow button to continue.

Step Eight
You can now select whether to Add Cydia, Add Installer, Replace Boot Logos, and Unlock Phone. Select the ones you would like to perform then click the clue arrow button

Step Nine
You will now be asked to select your bootloader files. Click the Browse button and select the 3.9 bootloader from the Pwnage folder on your desktop. Likewise do the same thing for the 4.6 bootloader file. Then click the blue arrow button to continue.

Step Ten
QuickPwn will now ask you to confirm your iPhone is connected via USB before continuing. Click the blue arrow button to proceed.

Step Eleven
QuickPwn will now automatically put your iPhone into recovery mode. Once its in recovery mode you will be prompted to: Hold the Home button for 5 seconds, Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds, then release the Power button and continuing holding the Home button until your iPhone is in DFU mode.

Watch the prompts carefully and follow along.

Step Twelve
Once QuickPwn detects your iPhone in DFU mode it will begin the jailbreak process.

Step Thirteen
Once jailbreaking is complete QuickPwn will inform you that it was successfull. Your iPhone will then proceed to run BootNeuter. This process will take about 5 minutes. Please be patient. Your iPhone will reboot when it has completed the process successfully!

Thunderbird - Lightning does not work in Ubuntu 9.04

I am back on Ubuntu :-( (newer version though) converted to Mac look. First thing TODO in new platform is, get all your emails back to work. So I installed Thunderbird migrated all my old mails & calendar data to new client. However the calendar isn't showing all my old data now.

Calendar plugin I used was lighting, which doesn't work simply copying everything, faced this issue while Thunderbird Migration from Ubuntu to Windows. So uninstalled lightning & installed it again, but this time it didn't work as last time.

The solution to get out of the this issue is install this lib:

sudo apt-get install libstdc++5

This worked for couple of my other colleagues too.

Weblogic issues not with jBoss

I’ve worked with Weblogic & jBoss both the application server for quite some time now. While working on weblogic I’ve faced some issues, below are couple of them which are not issues with jBoss:

1. CacheFullException.

2. Stuck Thread.

CacheFullException:

Cause of Exception: This issue would occur when number of Entity beans cached in memory goes beyond the default size or the size configured in weblogic.xml.

Solution: There is one attribute which can be set in weblogic.xml, to set maximum number of beans can be held in memory. If this attribute not configured explicitly, the default value is 1000. This is only a work around for CacheFullException. Why I am saying ‘only work around’ is because, you are only delaying the problem but not really resolving it with setting. If the usage of the application goes high, the value you have set would not be sufficient eventually.

After long struggle the solution we have implemented is, set the attribute value to some reasonable value & have your code ensure it does not load more beans than configured.

The places you would generally need to load beans in large size is, either when you need to show them on screen or need to do some heavy processing. The idea behind our implementation was to do a processing in batching.

Stuck Thread:

Cause of Exception: This error would occur if a processing thread is taking too long (longer than configured) then server would throw this exception.

Solution: In my opinion you should relook at your code, find the process which is taking too long & break down that process into logical chunks. In weblogic by default there are only 15 threads available for your application. In fact all 15 threads are not available, but few of them are reserved for application server.

The savior issues I faced with stuck thread was, after getting several stuck thread errors weblogic became handicapped, could not proceed further until the stuck threads were released. The quick ‘work around’ you can do for this issue is, through configuration increase the number of threads available for your application. By doing so at least the server would not stop its processing.

jBoss experience:

When I worked with jBoss earlier, I did not face any of the above issues with this server. jBoss handles the cache of beans efficiently, it can handle as many beans as your application needs without any complains. Also jboss handles the thread pool efficiently, you don’t need to do any explicit setting for it.

CVS repository checkout from branch by date

Do you want to checkout from production branch(assumed you know the date), but the branch has code changes after production release? I had same situation last week. XSLT Performance optimization

Are you looking for optimizing performance of your application which uses XSLT? Here is one thing I have done in XSLT code couple of time, which improved the performance at least by 200%!!! Avoid using the Expression: "//" for selecting the node in the document. Rather use the absolute(I used this) or relative path. One thing I should make clear is, I had about 8-10 xml's on which I was applying the stylesheet. So when xslt processor encounter '//', the processor start finding the path(after '//') from current location no matter where the given path is. That was the reason the application performance was degraded. When I took away the overhead from processor to find the path, & given the absolute path to the processor it worked smoothly. My mantra for performance optimization is, first find out the culprit which is consuming all the resources & taking so much time. Once you find the problem area, you should work in that area. So it might be in your case '//' is not the culprit, but a simpleembedded javascript having a for loop!

Weblogic - Time out user session

We were trying to configure the setting, so that it will kill the session of the logged in User after certain time & force the user to re-login in application in weblogic. After doing googling, we found there are two options to achieve the same : 1. Configuration in weblogic.xml file: Set the TimeoutSecs parameter in session-descriptor in weblogic.xml.This sets the time, in seconds, that WebLogic Server waits before timing out a session. However this value can be overridden by session-timeout element in web.xml(#2 below). <session-descriptor> <session-param> <param-name>TimeoutSecs</param-name> <param-value>300</param-value> </session-param> </session-descriptor>2.Configuring timeout in web.xml, session-timeout under session-config. The number of minutes after which the Web application expire.<session-config> <session-timeout>30</session-timeout> </session-config> On first go, we tried both the setting separately. However it wasn't working for some strange reason as expected. Later we figured that there is one more configuration which is stopping this setting to work as expected. The authentication method (in dev environment) was BASIC!!! Once changed the authentication to FORM & tried all worked smoothly. iPhone is DEAD! Switched Off but cannot switch it on!!!

It was a shocking morning for me, when I could not switch on my iPhone!!!

Last night I had installed iRealSMS(I don't think I have anything else then that), after installation went to the bed. I got up with the alarm, snoozed & shutdown second time. Got ready for the morning routine, having my tea, checked up the time to see if I am not getting late. That's the last thing I did. Once reach to place I was pushing the home button hardly but it did not came up. I got a lil shock! I had some hope to get it back though.

I was going to call the apple store, which was the only hope I had. Though I haven't bought the iPhone from that store but.

Just checked on net & on second link I got ...Which actually resolved the issue.

I have just Hold down HOME & POWER buttons at the same time(did not connect to computer) & saw the apple logo on the screen which gave a breather...

After starting the iPhone I got the following pop-up on screen :

After reading it I realized that SpringBoard was the culprit(also read similar on the other link I referred). So thought came in my mind after installing iRealSMS the SpringBoard wasn't restarted properly...

Long blog which I don't like personally, but one thing to add in there was iPhone went in Safe Mode, which was again other surprise for me. But it was mentioned in the above pop-up, so wasn't worry area. I did not know how to restart the SpringBoard but what I know was when I install / remove something it restart the SpringBoard. So simplest & good thing I could do was remove the iRealSMS.... it restarted the SpringBoard & everything is fine now....hurray!

iPhone 2.1 upgrade experience so far

I was so excited, after successfuly upgrading my iPhone to the newest version(2.1) from the original(1.1.4) one. Some of the new features were really good e.g. importing contacts from SIM card(not exceptional though). The motto behind upgrading was installing & using lots of awesome applications available recently.

The best thing I could(& excited to) do with upgrading was, to use the iphone as a modem. Connect to laptop(I don't own so far though) & do use net on laptop than just surfing on 4x6(don't know exact size).

However after successfully upgradation, performance of the phone degraded a lot, which wasn't expected. Also the battery life was suppose to have improved which did not.

Hurrying up on finishing the post, as lots of things lying in plate to clear.

iPhone 2.1 performance sucks. Obviuos areas it went down was keypad usage, after pressing any key it takes a while now to get the key typed in the editor(sms, mail, etc.).

Will continue to write after installing netshare(or any application), which will make iphone to work as modem!?!

iPhone backup awesome!!!

I spend a lot of time to find out, How to back up my contacts? before upgrading to newest version 2.1. That was the only thing I was interested in backing up. I found some links which were referring to some tools to use to backup your iPhone for contacts, mails, etc. However nothing sound promising to me. One of the article found(support.apple) which was claiming the iTunes backup could do it, wasn't very clear though.

Finally upgraded the iphone, jaibroke it. When connected back to iTunes, the first thing it asked me whether it should Setup as a new iPhone OR Restore from Backup. I have selected to Restore from backup. see image below after that...

The process for backing up went for long time, as I had lots of third party software installed on iPhone. Finally when its dones I was feeling happy to see all my contacts back as is, with the call history & SMS & Email.... almost restored back all default applications of iPhone.

We are using Weblogic with Oracle XE.

After changing the Connection Pool database to point to different database, its started giving the following error.

Stack Trace:

192.168.99.82:1521:xe

Problem starting Oracle services

If you are facing problems with starting the oracle services (services.msc), most likely your ip address has changed to newer one than the old(the time you installed Oracle on local system).

Solution : Change the IP to the original one

I don't know if you can change the ip in any one of the oracle files. I am guessing there should be a place where you should be able to put the new value of ip address manually.

Solution : Set the antlr lib as a first entry for CLASSPATH in weblogic startweblogic.bat file.

Hush! Back to Windows again! It feels like back to home, after a abroad trip!(never experience though).

First and the foremost thing to do is to migrate ALL the mail to the new platform. There are some very simple steps I had to take.

1. Close Thunderbird if its open.
2. Setup Thunderbird(as this is the one I was using originally) on Windows.
3. Copy everything from /home/yourloginname(e.g sachin)/.mozilla-thunderbird/XYZ.default (where XYZ is randomly generated ASCII value)
4. Paste it to C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Thunderbird\profiles\XXX.default (( XYZ is randomly generated ASCII value).
5. You are done.

Start you mozilla-thunderbird & everything would be exactly same as it was in your earlier OS.

If someone wants to migrate from Windows to Ubuntu, then the places are same, the only thing is copy the stuff from one place under .default & put it to the other .default.

One problem faced though was Calendar did not worked as is. I was using Lightning,.
So I have Uninstalled lightning & installed again. Again I could see all my calendar events as they were configured in earlier client.

Unable to load the default compiler class "com.sun.tools.javac.Main"

On weblogic startup, it gave me error :

Unable to load the default compiler class "com.sun.tools.javac.Main"

I had rt.jar in classpath of weblogic, but did not have tools.jar. I am not sure why the server giving this error suddenly.

Sol : Added tools.jar in classpath of weblogic.

(This is my classpath n startWeblogic.sh : CLASSPATH="${WEBLOGIC_CLASSPATH}:${POINTBASE_CLASSPATH}:
${JAVA_HOME}/jre/lib/rt.jar:${JAVA_HOME}/lib/tools.jar:
${WL_HOME}/server/lib/webservices.jar:${CLASSPATH}")

Need to run a single command :-

SQL> begin
2 dbms_xdb.sethttpport('80');
3 end;

Put the port number whatever you wish to, instead of '80'.
Check whether the port is changed by following command:-

SQL> select dbms_xdb.gethttpport as "HTTP-Port", dbms_xdb.getftpport as "FTP-Port" from dual;

Cotainer Managed Transactionality

One thing to keep in mind that transaction never starts whenever you do a local call to any function.
If you are in a session bean and you invoke any other function in the same bean then transaction will not get start for new call. What you need to do for that is you need to create a clone(object) of the that session bean and invoke the function.

System Properties Vs System Variable.

System properties are JVM properties, like following -
java.version, java.runtime.name, java.vendor.url, sun.cpu.endian

System variables are the Envioremental variables.

You can specify the system property as a argument to java command.
like if you wanna run a programme with some variable say, test
java -Dtest="testValue" javaClassName.

This is the good site I found for the CVS commands.
It ll be usefull probably when you want to write a batch file, to do your daily routine task(probably the first task of the day!) of updation of the project/product you are working on.

Ant tasks

You can have basic four tasks for Ant.
1. Clean - will delete everything before build starts.
2. Compile - will compile the source code.
3. Package - will do the packaging, like war, ear...
4. Deploy - will put packaged stuff in destination dir.

Then you can have the wrapper tasks.
like...
a. build - only do the compile, package and deploy.
b. rebuild - will clean and then compile, package and deploy.
c. all - all will run all the tasks defined in the build file.
